Most nights he sleeps in the living room, on one of the couches. But sometimes I wake up and he’s in my bed next to me. And I wonder if he might get used to it. I also wonder how much longer it’ll be before he moves on, or how much longer it’ll be before I finally kick him out. Some days I wake up and ask myself, “Is this the day we put an end to this? Is this the day someone comes to take him away?” But it’s been six months now, and he’s still here. And neither of us seems eager to change anything. He cooks for me, and does the laundry, and on the weekends we go to antique shops. We find all kinds of broken dishes and tattered chairs, and together we carry them home and mend them.

On our second date, he took me on a picnic, which was kind of cute except I’m allergic to anything that grows—flowers, trees, grass—so I sneezed my head off while he ate all the strawberries. I did manage to gulp three glasses of champagne between sneezing fits; I had my priorities. When he stuck a dandelion beneath my nose and said“make a wish,” I couldn’t help it. This was always the first question asked. They thought the simple act of touch would confess all morsels of a history. I wore gloves, so when they grasped my palms they couldn’t feel me. This one was different. She put in effort to read the lines beneath my second skin.
I watched her fingers meet mine through a small pass in the wall. Her hands were tired ones, the kind that had been working even before birth. She kneaded the latex, feeling the stretch and wrinkle of rubber, massaging it in slow waves. Soon, she mapped them out. With that catalogue her index finger smoothed each imperfection in my palm, careful and contemplative.
